When you reach the Sentinel Dome trailhead, you’ll leave the road and trek backcountry for a mile and a half to the summit of Sentinel Dome.Įnjoy the 360 degree panorama sunset. The road winds through the forest and eventually reveals fantastic views of the Sierras and Mt. It’s approximately 9 miles from the parking lot to the Sentinel Dome trailhead. The Glacier Point Trail is closed to cars beyond that point, and provides an excellent snowshoeing or cross-country skiing track. The trailhead begins at the Badger Pass ski area. Most people opt to head for the ski hut at Glacier Point, but Sentinel Dome is less crowded, and in my opinion, more rewarding. The trail is a cakewalk during the summer, but winter turns it into a 10 mile uphill grind from the car. The goal for our weekend was to do some winter camping in the Yosemite backcountry we decided on Sentinel Dome as our destination.

Update as of 12/20 the road rehabilitation project has been pushed back to 2022 due to Covid.This hike/snowshoe offers incredible views of Yosemite. The crowds thin out in the winter, leaving very few people alongside you on the trail.

  • Glacier Point Road will be closed for road repairs in 2021, so these viewpoints will only be accessible by strenuous trails, including the Four Mile, Pohono & Panorama Trails.
  • For reasons unknown, Sentinel Dome is nowhere near as popular as many other spots around the park for sunset, and that makes a trip there even more special. If you only have time for one sunset make it this one. There are tunnels and pits gouged in the polished. Sentinel Dome is top of our list for Yosemite sunset spots.

    Always bring twice as much water as you think you might need, snacks and sun protection, as well as a first aid/survival kit. Sentinel Dome and Glacier Point 267 water's edge, where cascades have carved out the rock under it.This hike requires climbing over fallen trees, scrambling up granite boulders, and crossing streams, so plan proper footwear accordingly.I have encountered both unforeseen rogue thunderstorms and sudden smoke from distant wildfires at different times while hiking this trail. Always plan ahead and check the weather.

    The full loop takes just over 5 miles, but I often clock at least 7 miles with all the possible exploring there is at each location.

I think it is both physically easier and more visually appealing to start at Sentinel Dome and end at Taft Point, but you can certainly reverse this hike.
